The global Church has “too often ignored the voices of women in its communities”, and must repent of its mistakes, empower its women, and seek reconciliation. We as women missionary society NGO has a mandate to remain committed to celebrating, supporting, mentoring, and working with other women, as well as “being attentive . . . especially [to] those living in extreme poverty, or with disability, those endangered by human trafficking, persecuted for their faith, denied education and legal rights — and so at greatest risk of gender-based violence and discrimination”.
It is becoming a common occurrence—an everyday thing. Barely a day passes in Zambia without the report of a case of violence against women, whether in a rural or an urban setting. In some areas, the number of reported cases averages 50 a day. It is widely believed, however, that many cases go unreported. And the numbers keep going up.
It’s for the reason highlighted above that the 17th Episcopal Women missionary society NGO has in the recent past engaged in advocacy, mental health awareness and outreach programs to ensure that the women’s voices and concerns are heard when we raise our banner for women's rights and gender equality.
It has been established through gender experts that the root causes of GBV can largely be narrowed down to inequality for women and the associated violence and harmful and controlling aspects are as a result of gender inequality
Women Missionary Society NGO has remained committed to promote and advocate for good mental health for all. It is in this same vain that the team has be actively participating and cooperating with the women missionary society to raise awareness through WMS forums such as retreats and conventions. We also managed to visit two mental health hospitals: Chainama Mental health hospital and Ndola central hospital and collaborate through an outreach program in Alumbwe, a rural part of kabwe in Lusaka north district of South East Zambia District.
As one of our mandate we remain committed to supporting and empowering vulnerable women by training them with sewing skills. Currently we have an on-going Project for Sanitary Pads and our aim is to train and empower a good number of vulnerable women within our church. Below a volunteer helps sew sanitary pads in support of our NGO project and our goal to make 5000 pads.
Our Prayer
Join voices with ours to condemn Gender Based Violence, advocate for mental health treatment, and support period poverty.
